Aurora - Dynamic patterns of brilliant lights that appear as curtains, rays, spirals or flickers covering the entire sky.

This work was commissioned as part of the refurbishment of the Beach Hotel in Merewether. Six pieces occupy two spaces, with three sculptures hanging in a large void, complemented by another three at the landing of the main internal stair.

The work explores variations of tensegrity, or integrity under tension, a structural principle based on a system of isolated components under compression inside a network of continuous tension, and arranged in such a way that the compressed members do not touch each other.

The result is a poetic exploration of geometry in motion, a series of delicate mobiles, varied in size and complexity, creating the illusion of floating in space, free to rotate in the breeze and connected by flickering rays of coloured light.

The perception of the shifting forms is continuously altered by the slow rotation and ability to view the piece from different angles and heights.

The hanging pieces are viewed from a distance, whilst the 3 fragments along the main stair, allow the viewer to move in closer and take in the details - the stitching of the cotton thread to the stainless steel ends, the tension of the wiring cables, the contrast and connections between natural and man made materials.

Whilst firmly anchored in geometric principles, together the pieces are an invitation to experience the intangible and feel the harmony of opposing but equal forces, action and reaction, rigidity and softness, unconstrained by gravity, time or space.
